Life Into Lifeless

One of the most fascinating aspects of photography, at least to me, is the idea of photographing lifeless subjects. Now, that would be a most horrible things to say if we’re talking about portraits. However, if you’re familiar with my work, you’ll know that I mainly photograph playing cards. I do, on occasion, shoot portraits or studies of magicians wherein I photograph the artist performing, however my main focus is playing cards.

Instagram Magic: It’s More Than Quick and Simple

Well, today I’m going to sound (read? whatever) like an old man. You see, I’ve been doing magic for roughly twenty years. I’ve gone from hobbyist to full-time professional, then back to hobbyist, and even now I’m considering going back to full-time. Over the last two decades magic has changed quite a bit. More specifically, how people view and consume magic is wildly different than it ever was. With Instagram being a predominant source of that consumption I think it’s important to discuss how this platform effects us.

What Makes An Effect Go From Good To Great?

With the amount of magic effects being pumped out these days, it’s difficult to distinguish what to buy and what to avoid. Between slightly deceiving trailers and careful wording, sometimes effect just don’t deliver. Beyond that, even if an effect does deliver who can decide on what to get? We could watch Instagram and snatch up the latest and greatest effect sweeping across its face. Or, maybe, just maybe we can start tailoring what we perform more closely to who we are.

Vernon, We Never Met But He Changed Everything

There’s a funny, maybe even interesting, aspect of influence when it comes to a person’s life. Often times we’re influenced by the people we spend time with. Family and friends are certainly among the top contenders when discussing this subject, as are different entertainers. The latter of those being extremely intriguing to me because of the nearly tangible disconnect between a person and their favorite people of fame. For me, one of the greatest influences of my life was Dia Vernon…and we’ve never met.
